Forestry Safety: Working Groups Raise Awareness for Fire Season Preparations

With the dry season approaching, forestry management groups in the Mpumalanga Escarpment have begun extensive firebreak operations around Sabie. As one of the largest man-made forest areas in the world, the risk of runaway veld fires remains a top priority for local authorities and private timber companies.

This week, several workshops were held to educate local residents on the dangers of illegal clearing and the importance of early reporting. Experts warned that the combination of high winds and dry timber can lead to catastrophic losses if not managed correctly. Beyond just fire prevention, the working groups are also discussing the impact of “pests” on the local pine and eucalyptus plantations, which could affect the region’s economic output. Residents are encouraged to stay updated via local radio and community forums for scheduled controlled burns.
