By:De-Shark

The Jock Trail parkrun marked a significant milestone as it celebrated its 7th anniversary at its 240th event. The 7th anniversary milestone which was celebrated on 21 February, is a testament to the dedication, community spirit and love for fitness that have flourished along the trail since the event’s inception.

Since the very first Jock Trail parkrun on 23 February 2019, the event has become a mainstay for local runners, joggers and walkers. Over the past seven years, 2,081 participants have completed an impressive 8,214 parkruns, covering a collective distance of 41,070 kilometers. Along the way, participants have achieved 932 new Personal Bests, highlighting the spirit of personal growth and friendly competition that parkrun embodies.

None of this would have been possible without the 197 dedicated individuals who have volunteered an incredible 2,678 times. Their commitment to making each Saturday morning event run smoothly is the backbone of the Jock Trail parkrun’s continued success.

To mark this momentous occasion, Jock Trail parkrun invited all “Graskoppers” and newcomers alike to join in the celebration. The anniversary event was extra special, with giveaways, spot prizes and of course, cake to fuel the celebration. The event kicked off at 7am and as always, participation was free.

The parkrun community is as diverse as it is welcoming, with the recent celebration event even seeing international visitors from Ireland. With about 200 parkruns across South Africa and over 600 in the UK, the movement is truly global.

Participants can register at parkrun.co.za, receive a personal barcode and join any parkrun event worldwide.

What sets Jock Trail parkrun apart is its vibrant community atmosphere. Each event provides an opportunity for socialising and making new friends, fostering a sense of belonging that goes beyond the finish line. There are even unique parkrun challenges, such as running at 50 or 100 different places and the fun Alphabet Collection Challenge, where runners aim to complete events starting with each letter of the alphabet.

Jock Trail isn’t without its challenges, occasional sewerage overflows and bridge flooding present obstacles, but thanks to the tireless volunteers who clean the trails and cut the grass, the event continues week after week. However, organisers note that more volunteers are always welcome to keep the event thriving.

Mr. Bosman, the event director of Jock Trail parkrun and a veteran of 20 Comrades Marathons, extended heartfelt thanks to the volunteers, sponsors and local authorities.

“We would like to thank the businesses and Thaba Chweu Local Municipality for their support through the years because without them being there for us, we wouldn’t be able to go on.” He also acknowledged the Department of Health, which plans to support parkrun due to its positive impact on community health. To the regular runners, he added, “Having you guys regularly, it helps to keep us going.”

Wendel Hough, owner of Thaba Tsweni Lodge Graskop and a long-time supporter who has completed nearly 50 runs, shared his congratulations: “I would like to congratulate the Jock Trail for the milestone that they’ve reached today in Graskop. It’s great to see that they have been going for so long.”

Another supporter well known as Coach Baba also thanked the volunteers for the work they do before and after every run, “The volunteers get here before everyone comes and they go home after everyone has left. I would like to say thank you for people that are sacrificing their time.”

With 75 participants at the event and the promise of more festivities to come, there’s no better time to become part of the Jock Trail parkrun family. Whether you’re chasing a new personal best, looking to meet new people, or just want to enjoy a Saturday morning outdoors, everyone is welcome.

So, lace up your shoes, bring your barcode and join the celebration as Jock Trail parkrun steps confidently into its eighth year proving once again that when a community comes together, every milestone is worth celebrating.
