Altitude Advantage: Sabie to Host Mpumalanga’s Premier High-Altitude Mountain Bike Challenge

Sporting bodies in Mpumalanga have confirmed that Sabie will host the inaugural high-altitude ‘Escarpment Endurance Challenge’ this winter. The multi-stage event aims to become a major drawcard on the national racing calendar, utilizing the region’s unique natural advantages and demanding topography.

Known for its punishing climbs, the route will push athletes from the town, through the vast commercial pine forests, and up onto the rocky, exposed escarpment near Bridal Veil Falls. Event directors highlight that the 1,500m elevation profile offers a perfect “altitude training” scenario for professional teams, while the challenging, techncal ‘single-track’ sections through ancient fern gullies provide an unforgettable experience for elite amateur riders.

“Sabie has the terrain, the existing trails, and the infrastructure to host a truly world-class endurance event,” said a spokesperson for the organizing committee. “By introducing a dedicated high-altitude challenge, we are highlighting Sabie not just as a leisure destination, but as a premier location for competitive, bio-diverse sport.” The event is also expected to provide a significant boost to local tourism, with specialized accommodation and support services being developed for the participating teams. Registration opens next month for the July event.
